What is a perito traductor
In Mexico, a perito traductor is a translator authorized by a state government or judicial authority to issue translations with official validity. The figure is similar to a sworn or court-appointed translator in other countries. The perito signs and seals each translation and is legally responsible for its accuracy.
Why Mexican authorities require it
Notaries, courts, the Public Registry, the tax authority (SAT), customs, immigration offices and many government agencies only accept documents in a foreign language when they are accompanied by a translation made by a perito. A translation by an ordinary translator or an agency, however accurate, is usually rejected for official procedures.
Typical cases include filing a foreign power of attorney before a notary, registering a subsidiary, presenting evidence in a lawsuit, supporting a tax audit or completing an immigration procedure for expatriate staff.
